"Most
furniture is manufactured to last
a lifetime and as a result, furniture very rarely wears out.
Obsolescence through
rapidly changing fashions contributes to the growing mountain of
redundant furniture. The scope for furniture recycling
is huge. To realise this potential work must focus on
research, development and the marketing of existing waste
re-utilisation initiatives."
'Sustainable Waste
Management: The Stakeholders' Guide', Environment Council, June 2000
Established by local
people in 1994, FN! is a registered charity. It collects
donated furniture and household effects and makes them
available at as low a cost as possible to people in need throughout Sussex.
FN! exists to put your unwanted
furniture to good use, to prevent re-usable materials going to
waste and to help thousands of people create and maintain a
decent, safe home environment. We also collect office
furniture and can help equip voluntary and community groups.
Social housing
doesn't end with just a roof over your head; we believe the
right to choose how you furnish your home is a basic 'quality
of life' issue. Recent research by the Joseph Rowntree
Foundation, Shelter and Crisis has all emphasised that the
lack of furniture is one of the key reasons for the failure of
homeless resettlements in first tenancies. Many
thousands of low income households cannot possibly meet the
financial burden associated with equipping a home.
FN! therefore aims to offer as
wide a choice of good quality furniture as is possible. If you are on a low income, we will only charge you what it
costs us to supply what you choose: that means we are simply
the cheapest way of furnishing your home!
