In the last few years we have expanded our service and under a contract with the Council, cover over 8,500 households in Lewes,
Kingston and surrounding villages. Our team of 6 people use electric vehicles to collect materials from households. The
vehicles are custom-built, which, as well as being very cheap to run, offer huge savings in environmental impact as they have no emissions
and do not use fossil fuel.
Lewes District Council itself has undertaken recycling in Newhaven, Seaford and
Peacehaven.
FN!s approach to kerbside recycling embodies the same key principles as its other projects:
community involvement, innovation, value for money and quality of service.
What can you do?
Firstly you can join our kerbside scheme. There is no fee and if you live in Lewes or the surrounding areas
we will give you two recycling boxes (one fits inside the other so as not to take up too much room) and collect from your house every two
weeks. Either call us on 01273 479666 or send an email to recycling@furniturenow.org.uk.
Alternatively you can use our contact form.
Secondly you can minimise the waste you produce by thinking about what you
buy and how you use it. Think about the amount of packaging you are buying and perhaps choose items that come in containers that you
can reuse or recycle. If you receive a lot of junk mail then call the Mailing Preference Service
on 0845 703 4599 and get off those mailing lists.
Thirdly, Buy Recycled!
By purchasing items made from recycled materials you are helping
the cycle of resources. If you can buy recycled paper then trees need not be cut down and transported hundreds of miles wasting valuable
trees and resources. Also buying recycled means that you are creating a market for the materials you want to see recycled in the first
place!
The Future
By expanding the service to cover villages and hamlets around Lewes, FN!
has now reached the maximum coverage possible. Therefore we are looking at raising the participation which, at 70%, is already one of
the highest in the UK.
FN! will also be striving to collect more materials; at present we collect paper, cans,
plastics, textiles and in partnership with Save the Whale campaign provide printer cartridge recycling envelopes. However there are
still considerable amounts of waste that we can help the community recycle.
Our first aim is to extend our collection of glass to Lewes.
Other materials we would like
to see collected include drinks cartons, batteries, organic waste and plastic tubs. However there is no funding in place for these and a
time scale cannot be given.
