Training Opportunities at FN! Lewes

Furniture Now!'s Training Centre was established in 2001 and offers a relaxed and supportive environment for students to develop their skills and learn new techniques.

We currently offer three courses:

Creative Crafts, Decorative Painting Techniques and Employment Skills

About the courses

  • Learning takes place in small groups, in workshop-based classes and is practical and informal.

  • All courses are run in partnership with Sussex Downs College (which entitles students to the use of College facilities and to Student Union membership).

  • We do not charge for training and all equipment and materials are provided free.

  • We are able to contribute towards students' travel expenses up to a maximum of £4 per day.

  • There are opportunities to start throughout the year.

  • You will gain confidence along with new skills, which will help you to take a step forward towards employment or further education.

The Creative Crafts and Decorative Painting Techniques courses allow students to learn and develop their knowledge of furniture restoration techniques, from basic repairs and surface preparation to designing and applying a variety of decorative effects to their chosen pieces. The furniture you restore, design and create on the course will be offered for sale to individuals and families through our furniture service.

The Employment Skills course will enable students to identify their strengths, skills and achievements and match them to suitable job and career opportunities.

Who can apply

The courses are designed to cater for the needs of people suffering some form of social exclusion; particularly those with mental health needs, the under-represented and the long-term unemployed.

Support on the course

Your Instructor will ensure that you settle in to your studies, are kept informed of your progress and supported in a way that is appropriate to your individual needs as a learner.

If you think you will need additional help with your studies we will be happy to discuss your needs before joining the course, or during it should your circumstances change. We can provide support in different ways to help you feel more confident and enjoy the course.

Towards the end of the course, the Training Co-ordinator can offer you advice and guidance on suitable progression opportunities.
